eating in belgium

we lucked out. our apartment in belgium is not in a touristy area, and we are next to some really amazing restaurants. on our first night, we headed to the comptoir d'antoine. it was a wonderful experience. we literally ate in the chef's kitchen. this is the view from our table.

notice on the far right of the chef's counter, there is a meat grinder. it is not for making sausages, but rather it is for steak tartare -- a very popular dish in belgium. we noticed these in most of the restaurants we have been too. they are usually located where you eat so that you can observe as they grind your meat. i was actually surprised to see that most of the tables around us ordered the steak tartare. i'm not sure whether we will try some before the end of the week. we don't have any takers yet. but we did sample some of the local delicacies. we've had mussels, white asparagus which are in season, and we even tried the snails...

our favorite belgium delicacies, however, are not served in a restaurant... they are sold in specialty stores all over town: waffles and fries.

but nothing beats walking into random a chocolate store and picking two of your favorites chocolates just to sample, just because you can.
