Halloween Night

One of the singular features of Halloween in Ireland is that the Irish go all out with fireworks, sky lanterns and bonfires. Hearing and seeing fireworks go off is always very impressive, even more so for the kids. Amazement at the sparkling colors, combined to the thrill of collecting candy, was somewhat overwhelming for them at first because all of their senses were being provoked at once. The explosions can be heard until very late. The rate even picks up as the night progresses.

The bonfires are also impressive. Made from wood pallets and old tires, they are built in the days, weeks even, leading to Halloween. You can see them in many neighborhoods around the country.
In Dublin alone the costs of clean up are estimated at more than a million Euros. This includes a special fire brigade who is far too busy on this dangerous night...
We didn't attend any bonfires because we do not support civic disobedience, the Irish version of the "Aberdeen street party". This year, South Dublin City Council is asking citizens and community groups to get involved in the 'Bulbs not bonfires' initiative and challenge anti-social behaviour by celebrating Halloween with bulb planting and enjoying flowers in the Spring.

But nothing compared to the beauty of the peaceful sky lanterns floating in total darkness. Throughout the evening you could see many floating in the sky. This is what the kids will remember most.
