In fact, it started raining exactly almost as I clicked the "publish post" button this morning. Nevertheless, off we went to the Natural History Museum, aka the "Dead Zoo".
The Natural History Museum is filled with stuffed animals, real ones. The first floor is comprised of native irish fauna: mammals, birds, insects and creatures of the sea, fish and invertebrates. There are even European swallows, or are they African swallows? I forget... On the second floor, you can catch animals of the world.
I can imagine you asking: "Can we stuff a
kangaroo?" As Bob the builder would reply: "Yes we can!" Some of the specimen in this exhibition date back from the 18th century. That makes them more than a 200 years old!
We've visited a couple of zoos where it is grand to admire live animals, such as giraffes or elephants. Standing next to a still rhinoceros is certainly almost as impressive. Colin even blew into an improvised horn elephant tusk, but we made sure not to disobey the rules under Alexi's watchfull eye.
We've each chosen a favorite animal and will tell you all about them in the upcoming days.
