armagh rhymers

yesterday, we went to see the armagh rhymers, one of northern ireland's most celebrated folk theatre ensembles. they were playing at the national museum of ireland. it was a great example of irish heritage. traditionally, on new year's eve, men would put on clothes made out of sacks of potatoes and wear tall conical masks. from house to house, they would perform songs and folk stories to entertain families.

they had beautiful home made puppets in their show. alexi enjoyed a turn making a puppet dance.

They told us about the Irish legend of Johnny MacllWaterbrush and the story of Odysseus and the Cyclops, engaging the kids in the audience to help out with those famous tall tales.
