roadtrip

our family motto for the new year is to "live more, fret less." it is inspired by a series of travel books on slow living that celebrate all that is unique, local, natural, traditional and sensory in cities around the world. yesterday, the weather was sunny. the local newspaper was calling for snow in the next couple of days, so we decided to seize the moment, take advantage of the beautiful weather, and head out on a roadtrip to explore loughcrew cairns in county meath.

just like newgrange, loughcrew cairns are 5000 year old passage graves. however, they are the best kept secret in archaeological ireland. gloriously. there are no tourists, no guides, no tickets, nothing! you just stroll up the hill and explore these wonders at your will. you can even get the key to explore inside the passages at the loughcrew gardens nearby.

inside the passages, we found etchings on the stones. the kids were completely free to enter the chambers and to discover hidden treasures. these passages date back to between 3500 and 3300 bC.

after exploring inside, the kids climbed to the top of the passages and we were able to admire the view. it was a great day to slow down and smell the mountain air.
